Smudging is a purification ritual that originated in the North American Indian tribes. The sage is usually placed in a fireproof bowl or plate, after which it is lit. After the bundle has burned for a while, smoke begins to develop, this smoke is then blown/swept with the hand or a feather around the person, object or place to be cleaned and balanced.
